Pool makes a splash

YES, kids had a look of wonder about them as they filed in through the doorways, but so did adults, mums, dads, pops, and grandmas.

At last the town has the swimming pool it has craved, for about 30 years in fact.

The official opening of Ocean Grove’s swimming pool was a time when politicians would rightly bask in their achievements, the builders could stand proud that they completed the work right on schedule and centre managers could finally begin running the new annexe they long planned for. But that aside, for tots, nippers, teens, and Boroughcoutas swimmings alike, it was the first day of lots of days of fun - and happiness - this facility will bring.

The Ocean Grove swimming pool, or correctly the Bellarine Aquatic & Sports Centre, is a partnership project involving the City of Greater Geelong which provided $5.5 million and the State Government which contributed $2.5 million.

Cr Jan Farrell who worked doggedly to secure the pool for Ocean Grove said she was thrilled to see it open.

“Bellarine residents have been waiting for this for years and I’m delighted it’s now open,” she said.

“When planning community infrastructure projects, you strive to accommodate the needs of as many residents as possible, within your budget, and I believe we’ve achieved that here.”

“The community has really embraced this new centre – already more than 650 people have signed up for the Learn to Swim program, which is terrific!”
