Cobras start 2009 in top 3

RAIN put a dampener on things at the snakepit with all games in Round 7 of BPCA cricket washed out but by the next round they were comfortably in third spot.
The big highlight for the week was a visit from Santa, who hitched a ride with the local CFA to deliver some presents for the cobra kids at the Christmas party. In the previous week, the cobras put in some strong performances in the local derby against Ocean Grove, winning a couple of games and fighting out a thrilling tie in C grade.
A Grade
Collendina managed a good win despite some wobbles in their innings caused by some tight bowling from the home side. Chasing 156, the top order had a minor hiccup to be 3/45 before Kade Norquay (52) and Luke Buckland (55) joined together and put the cobras well within reach of victory with a 99-run partnership. Both batsmen fell with the win in sight, and the tail-enders started looking nervous as the game tightened up. Fortunately, the runs came and the rest of the day provided some much-needed batting practice for the tail-enders as Collendina finished the day with 232 on the board.
In the final game of the year Collendina A defeated St Albans 7/176 to 8/157. They go into the new year in third place, equal on points with second placed Queenscliff.
B Grade
The B’s had 186 on the board and made a good start, with junior speedster Paul Liistro doing the job again with new ball and taking 3/31. Ocean Grove consolidated well to be 3/100 before Dave Treharne took the ball and ripped through the Grubbers’ lower order, rolling them for 158. Treharne finished with the excellent figures of 5/37 despite some poor catching from his team-mates, although he did commit the cardinal sin of dropping one off his own bowling.
C Grade
The C grade game went down to the wire, with Ocean Grove chasing down 199 for a rare tied match. Dan Worn (4/53) and Leon Walsh (2/23) started the innings off well, before junior trio Sam Tucker (1/15), Andy Devereaux (1/27) and Andy Higgins (2/20) bowled some very good spells to support the senior bowlers. The Grove batsmen kept the scoreboard ticking throughout the morning and looked the goods with the score on 6/175 before two quick wickets from Higgins turned the game around. Worn returned to the attack and held his nerve to take the last wicket with the scores level to split the points in a very exciting afternoon of cricket at Shell Road.
D Grade
The D’s had a major meltdown in round 9 of the one-day competition, going down by 80 runs against Anglesea. The legendary Collendina Collapse was on display again, with the team losing all ten wickets for 110 in only 25 overs. Anglesea made short work of the target, knocking up 9/190 despite some good bowling from Trent Buckland (4/58) and Mark Fletcher (3/37).
