OCEAN Grove Primary and Wallington Primary are among 15 local schools that have secured over $27 million of funding in round one of the Primary Schools for the 21st Century program.
Ocean Grove will get $3 million and Wallington will get $2 million under program.
An excited Federal MP, Darren Cheeseman, said the Schools for the 21st Century program was the most important piece of public policy announced since the election.
“I think this is brilliant public policy, with multiple benefits to kids, families, tradespeople and communities.”
“There are some fantastic projects that have been announced that will transform some of our local communities.”
Other schools in Torquay, Colac and Grovedale will also benefit.
“St Therese have a really exciting project, which is a new state-of-the-art school hall with a 500 square metre capacity. This will not just be a huge benefit to the school, this is exactly what the Torquay community needs and this facility will also be used by the community as a whole.”
He said the projects in Ocean Grove would have “very significant community benefits”.
“It is wonderful to see our local schools and our local community benefit from the Government’s huge investment in new school buildings,” he said.
The $12.4 billion P21 program will deliver much needed funding to every primary school for major infrastructure projects, including libraries, multipurpose halls and classrooms.
Construction and refurbishment work will commence as soon as possible. Many of the P21 projects planned to begin this month will provide immediate support for local jobs and communities.
Darren Cheeseman encouraged all local primary schools to submit applications for Round Two which closes on 15 May 2009.
“Today’s announcement is another big step in delivering the Building the Education Revolution, a key element of the Government’s $42 billion Nation Building – Economic Stimulus Plan.”
“By investing in our local schools, the Rudd Government is helping to keep local contractors, tradies, truck drivers and small businesses working during these difficult days.”
