ALDI is believed to have shown an interest in land to the east of the Zebra Bar, between the Terrace and the Parade.
Although the retailer would not comment on specific enquiries they have confirmed a “strong interest” in opening a store in the town and favour a town centre rather than an out of town location.
Other sources in the town have confirmed that approaches have been made regarding the land although part of the project would probably entail the acquisition of a council car park. It is not known whether the council has been contacted on that matter.
It is also understood that the car park and adjoining land would easily fit the store’s need for a 1,800sqm site.
Another area that has been mooted is on the corner of The Avenue and Hodgson Street, opposite the old fire station and Ocean Grove Park.
Aldi had previously cast an eye on the previously dormant site earmarked by Target.
However Target has reinforced its intention to take the spot and scuppered any opportunities in that direction.
