GRAEME Burchell was the foreman on the job – so to speak – when Ocean Grove’s log cabin toilet block was built some 30 years ago.
Fast forward to 2010 and it seems fitting that he’s there to oversee it’s demolition.
In fact Graeme has come full circle and it is now his own firm that won the contract to build its modern, environmentally friendly replacement.
“I was working for Ian Dearly, Ocean Grove builders, then.
“There were six of us on site building the log cabin type walls. We’d never seen anything like that before. It was a special run of timber and had minimal nailing. It certainly stood the test of time.”
Graeme said the new block would be vastly different. The roof and surrounding paving will capture the water in an underground tank and this would provide 70 per cent of the flushing water needed in the peak months.
In addition the new toilet block will be set deeper into the land and set back so as to blend in with the landscape, much as the Dunes.
The architect is Baade Harbour of Geelong.
The new toilet block is expected to be completed by November.
