OCEAN Grove-Barwon Heads Lions Club has achieved yet another milestone in community support, packing its 1000th food carton for distribution by community charitable organisations.
The value of the 1000 boxes is estimated to be between $80,000 and $100,000.
Club president Mrs Brenda Walter said club members John Brady, Ed Corless and Don Everett made regular trips to the Victorian Food Relief organisation in Melbourne which collects surplus and over stocked fresh, frozen and packaged foodstuffs from supermarkets and other distributors for charitable distribution.
The Lions bring a van load of produce back to Ocean Grove where it is stored and packed into boxes by club members for easy distribution to welfare agencies such as Uniting, Anglican, Baptist churches as well as the Church of Christ, St Vinnies and the Salvos.
Mrs Walter said the club had recently been donated the use of a large commercial fridge and a freezer which would enable Lions to distribute perishable food which it had been unable to do in the past.
“This allows us to store basic items such as margarine, cheese and similar products as well as vegetables and fruit for short periods.
“And we are now also able to store frozen products for immediate distribution as they are needed by needy families.
“Sometimes there are even toys available,” she said.
James Douglas (Uniting Church) and Peter Hobbs (Salvation Army) said the Lions project - not yet two years old - was a tremendous help to their community service operations.
