PROMISING Ocean Grove teenager Jacob Grills got the chance to mix with the world’s best up-and-coming tennis players at the Australian Open junior event this month.
The 17-year-old played in the boys’ singles and doubles event at Melbourne Park. Though Grills lost his round one boys’ singles match to Korean Duck Hee Lee 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) on Saturday, January 19, he fought hard going down to Hee Lee in a closely contested second set tie-breaker 7-4. Hee Lee, who claimed a total of 75 points to Grills’ 64 points, won the bigger points during their encounter despite a gallant effort from the Ocean Grove local.
Grills has since teamed up with Daniel Guccione in the boys’ doubles event for the second year running.
In 2012, Grills and Guccione lost a thrilling round one match in three sets in their debut appearance in the boys’ doubles event at Melbourne Park.
