Ross Hannaford, Co-founder of legendary Australian rock band Daddy Cool, will be playing at The Ocean Grove Hotel on Friday, September 17, from, 6pm til late.

The event will feature Jamaican reggae music and Ross will be joined by well-known local musicians Tim Neal (a long-time collaborator with Hannaford), Jon Willard and the Scion Pirates.

Scion Pirates specialise in early reggae, rocksteady and ska drawn from the Caribbean, Ethiopia and Nigeria.

Also spinning a collection of hip-shakin, rare roots reggae will be DJ Tom Noonan (Stroke It Radio/Sounds System).

The hotel is offering a Jamaican menu to go with the theme and there will be a door prize for the best dressed “Reggae Pirate”.

The Scion Pirates are: Dave Bambrook (drums); Tim Neal (sax, keys and backing vocals); Tim Fullerton (bass and backing vocals); Travis Brinnand (lead vocals and percussion); Jon Willard (guitar and vocals) and Douglass Matheson (sax and backing vocals).

Jon said the whole evening was an exciting development at the hotel which has a history of hosting major musicians.

“This is pretty exiting. The OG hotel is kind of redeeming itself.”

Talking about Ross, he said: “That great voice, he’s got a lot of stage presence.”

Tim Neal’s association with Ross goes back to the Esplanade Hotel in the early 80s.

“I was about 23 . it was a life changing experience. I was right into reggae and jazz. He is the grand wizard of Australian reggae.”

Tim said that the music will be more obscure reggae, such as Count Ossie, rather than covers.

“It’s sort of primal, early reggae music with a bit of Ross”

Last time Ross played the ‘Collendina’ was with Daddy Cool in the 1970s.

* Doors open at 6pm. Grab your tickets from the venue or from webtickets.com.au.

OCEAN Grove goes in search of an unique premiership treble in this weekend’s Bellarine Football League Under 18 Grand Final, writes Mark Heenan.

The young Grubbers now face ladder leaders Drysdale in the league decider at Spring Creek Reserve in Torquay on Saturday.

Ocean Grove, who won Under 18’s premierships in 2008 and 2009, secured a BFL Grand Final berth after a gutsy nine-point win against Geelong Amateur in last Saturday’s preliminary final at Drysdale.

The Hawks have beaten the Grubbers on both occasions in 2010, in Round one Drysdale won by 32 points although it was a much closer contest in Round 10 - The Hawks defeating Ocean Grove by only 13 points.

The Grubbers’ five-goal second quarter blitz helped seal the match against the Ammos after Ocean Grove trailed by 10 points at the first break in the wet and slippery conditions at the Drysdale Recreation Reserve.

Final scores were Ocean Grove 9.9.63 to Geelong Amateur 8.6.54.

“It was touch and go (close) for a fair bit of the game,” Ocean Grove Under 18 co-coach Matt Tyrrell said after the match.

“We managed to kick away with a few goals in the second quarter.”

Best afield James Bennett, the dynamic Patrick Maloney, Tom Lundberg and goalsneak Aaron Hapgood all kicked two goals apiece for the Grubbers.

A large gathering of supporters, family and friends from Ocean Grove will head down to Torquay on Saturday to watch young Grubs do battle against the Hawks.

Match starts at 9:15am on Saturday September 11 at Spring Creek Reserve.

In other news, Geelong Amateur will meet Drysdale in the BFL Grand Final after the Hawks defeated Queenscliff by 34 points on Saturday, while Geelong Amateur tackle Torquay in BFL Reserves Grand Final.

TWO Ocean Grove men have been arrested over a vandalism attack in Ocean Grove last weekend.

Acting Sergeant John Dunstan from the Bellarine Police Station said the men aged in their early 20s were charged and bailed over the graffiti estimated at causing $3000 damage.

Rex Walton of Ocean Grove faced Geelong Magistrates Court last Monday, receiving a 12-month suspended sentence.

Several businesses in The Terrace including Ocean Grove Pizza, Home Hardware, Coles and the Medical Centre were spray painted with distinct tags about 4am Saturday morning.

Witnesses who saw the men walking down The Terrace with spray cans called police.

“It’s disappointing they occurred, but what’s more, it’s disappointing that local people decided to trash their own town,” Sergeant Dunstan said.

Police believe the men are part of a gang responsible for the recent spate of graffiti around Ocean Grove.

“These sorts of operations will continue, they’re on notice,” Sergeant Dunstan said.

“No tolerance will be shown to criminal or anti-social behavior.”

On the same weekend, three Ocean Grove youths were issued with $475 infringement notices for disorderly conduct.

The group were given the on-the-spot fines for vandalizing street signs at the Presidents Avenue and Madeley Street intersection.

One of Ocean Grove’s iconic images painted on the side of the Pizza Place by Chris Stirk from Bush n Beach Artwork remains covered in unsightly graffiti.

“I’ve been here forever and it’s never happened before,” he said.

The local art identity known as Stirk, said it was extremely disappointing to see the tags on top of his mural.

“I wouldn’t paint a mural over their graffiti but they paint over mine,” he said.

The mural has been a feature in The Terrace for over ten years and Stirk has changed the beach scene several times. He now has to figure out how to repair the damage.

“I’ll try to touch it up but I use acrylic paint but they’ve used enamel so it might come through,” he said.

THE boys treated the travelling Cobra supporters who ventured out to Lara with a tremendous performance of which they should be proud.

A fine day and dry ground allowed us to showcase our skills and teamwork which after quarter time overwhelmed our opponents.

Nick Anastassious and Luke Bastiaan were fantastic marking targets, Nick kicked 5 goals and Luke 3. Christian West was always dangerous with the ball in his hands and kicked 4 goals, including a checkside from the boundary Eddie Betts would have been proud of.

Josh Kehagias kickstarted us with 2 telling first quarter goals and Zaine Cordy, a deserving best on ground medal winner also kicked 2 goals alternating between centre half forward and the midfield. Jed Evans and Nat Gravener put the icing on the cake with last quarter goals.

Down back our reliable back six stood firm with Brayden Warren, Ned Holland and Nick Murphy positioning themselves beautifully to often mark unopposed.

We had drive all day off both wings from our speedsters Josh Prendergast and Zac Ramsey.

Our midfield general Matt Caldow played his usual disciplined game and James Stirling was the Stirlo we rely on every week, giving 110% effort into every contest.

But on the day to have such a comprehensive victory every boy contributed to the win, as was the case every week.

The boys should be congratulated on how they represented themselves and their club all day long.

Congratulations to Mohry and Charlie for going back to back. Two finer blokes to educate our boys on football you could not find, and our boys will be better footballers as they progress from being under their guidance.

Finally thanks to Bernie Dynes for stepping into the runners role for the day. Apparently he enjoyed it so much he managed to miss the bus back and almost had to run back to Ocean Grove to begin the celebrations.

Kinder funding http://www.oceangrovevoice.com/2010/09/kinder-funding/ http://www.oceangrovevoice.com/2010/09/kinder-funding/#comments Tue, 07 Sep 2010 07:13:39 +0000 abnews http://www.oceangrovevoice.com/?p=1721

GEELONG City Council has applied for two grants to help Ocean Grove’s struggling kindergartens.

A $200,000 grant from the department of Education and Early Childhood Development’s Renovation and Refurbishment Grant scheme will help give 50 new places at the Ocean Grove Kindergarten for the 2012 school year.

The department also invited the City to submit an application of funding of up to $1 Million to help develop an integrated children’s centre hub in the town.

Local Councillor Jan Farrell said that Ocean Grove’s kindergartens were in great need of funding.

“With the population growth on the Bellarine Peninsula there is clearly a lack of kindergarten infrastructure in Ocean Grove.” Cr Farrell said.

“We know that we need to deliver extra capacity in a very short time frame.”

An interim measure for 2011 will see Surfside and Ocean Grove Kindergartens working together to provide the extra spaces required for next year.

Sally-ann Caligari from the Ocean Grove Kindergartens Future Committee said that they already have 32 more kids than spots and it’s only August.

“Surfside kindergarten has received an unprecedented number of applications for 2011,” she said.

The two kinders will share their facilities to provide three sessions a week with a consistent teacher to accommodate the children.

Sally-ann said the grant will be necessary for the town if future families want their children to attend kindergarten locally.

“Our future committee welcomes any grants that the City of Greater Geelong can put forward,” she said.

“If the money doesn’t come through then we would be in big trouble.”

Analysis of Surfside Ocean Grove is already underway as a potential site for the integrated children’s hub which would include two kindergartens, maternal and child health centre and extended day care.

The hub would be up and running for the 2013 year, in time for the government’s mandatory state wide increase of four year old kinder hours from 12 to 15 hours per week by 2013.

Councillor Farrell said that she was thrilled with the council’s decision to apply for the funding.

“I’m very excited that Ocean Grove has been chosen by Geelong Council for the precinct’s first children’s hub,” Cr Farrell said.

Corangamite’s sitting member Darren Cheeseman polled 770 more votes than Sarah Henderson to make the constituency the most marginal and rural independents fell in behind Labor leader Julia Gillard at a national level.

Cheeseman has held the seat with a 0.4 per cent margin, finishing on 47,276 votes to Henderson’s on 46,506.

There are plans to redraw the seat for the next election, a factor that some say may make the seat a Coalition stronghold.

In men’s senior soccer division 1 Surfside Waves are finding their form and pushing for a finals place in a closely contested league. Despite some indifferent results the Waves are in fourth spot, with only a few points separating the top six teams in the league. In their latest home match the Waves turned on the form with a 7-0 thrashing of struggling North Geelong with two goals each for Sid Smith and Nick Hargreaves and goals from Stan Nangle, Steve McGain and Tod Mexted. It was a special day for coach Nick Hargreaves as he notched up his 100th league goal for the Waves. In their latest match the Waves played away to league leaders Rangers and put in a really strong performance, in a physical encounter, coming away with a share of the points in a 2-2 draw, with Nick Hargreaves scoring both goals. With only three league games left it is sure to be an exciting run in to the campaign as the Waves battle to ensure their place in the finals.

THE netball girls had a very successful day on Saturday against Queenscliff with 9 wins, a draw and one loss. Great work girls!

Next weekend will be the last home and away game. It looks as though 5 of our junior sides will be in the finals so get behind each other, train hard and success will hopefully be yours. Remember that all finals will be played at Drysdale. Semi finals are on Sunday- August 22nd and 29th and the Grand Final on Sunday 5th September. Let’s get behind our girls and support them over the final series.

Alice shot 26 of Victoria’s 30 goals and was also the Victorian recipient of the Amy Safe Award (a best & fairest equivalent). This is a wonderful achievement by an outstanding young netballer. Alice will represent Australia at a May tournament in New Zealand next year.

SATURDAY August 14 looms as D-Day for the Ocean Grove Football Club if they want a piece of the 2010 Bellarine Football League finals.

The Grubbers (10-7) face fourth-placed Torquay (11-6) at Spring Creek Reserve in the final home and away season fixture that will decide Ocean Grove’s finals’ fate.

The winner of the Round 18 Tigers v Grubbers clash will cement a BFL finals berth after Ocean Grove 8.10.58 suffered a 19-point loss to Queenscliff 10.17.77 on Saturday in their final home game of 2010.

Anglesea (10-7), in sixth position, can make finals and although it lost to Geelong Amateur on Sunday, the Kangaroos head into Saturday’s match against the winless Newcomb Power as hot favourites.

Bear in mind both Torquay (122.44%) and Ocean Grove (121.53%) have a more superior percentage than Anglesea (92.17%).

Second-placed Coutas dom-inated the Grubbers from the outset, although the margin flattered the home team in the end as Ocean Grove kept Queenscliff goalless in the last term.

A clearly frustrated Ocean Grove coach Cameron Mc-Gregor said while Queenscliff thoroughly deserved their win, he admitted his team only played one decent quarter and were lucky to only lose by 19 points.

The home side trailed by 44 points at three-quarter time before the Grubbers kicked four unanswered goals in the final quarter.

“They (Queenscliff) had opportunities to blow us away in the first half and they kicked a lot of points,” an honest McGregor said after the match.

“Some of it was the pressure we put on them, some of it was inaccurate kicking from their forwards. “At three quarter-time we were seven goals down and threw caution into the wind and got within three goals.

“We have beaten them once this year and they have beaten us once this year and our worse loss to them has been by 19 points (today) and we played ordinary football.

“Queenscliff had winners all across the ground today.”

The Coutas, who kicked the first three goals, gained the initial ascendancy in the opening quarter and looked the far better equipped team in the wet and slippery conditions.

Dangerous Queenscliff midfielder Roscoe Holmes won numerous centre clearances, while Daniel Measures and Cameron Burnside both played strong games.

Queenscliff coach Heath Jamieson said the emphasis in pre-game planning was to win contested ball on the back of the Grubbers nail-biting two-point win against the Coutas in Round eight.

“The last time we played Ocean Grove they smashed us with contested footy and smashed us in the middle of the ground – so that was a real focus for us to get on top in that area,” Jamieson said.

The visitors took advantage of the Grubbers limited ruck stocks, Coutas’ seasoned big man Joshua Evans had a field day and dominated the stoppages.

The under-size quartet of Tom McManus, Shaun Maloney, Wayde Piec and permanent defender Sam Van Deuren shared ruck duties after Grubber makeshift ruckman Ben Wilkinson missed the match with concussion.

“Yes we need a ruckman, we don’t have a (seasoned) ruckman, they don’t grow on trees we can’t pull someone in this time of year,” McGregor said. “The guys that had a crack at the ruck had a go and they weren’t embarrassed.”

Jamieson said Evans’ dom-inance in the ruck went a long way to ensuring his side’s victory.

“One thing Ocean Grove is struggling with is a key ruckman and I think Josh Evans showed his worth today,” Jamieson said.

“They (Ocean Grove) are not in the finals yet – The Grubbers are playing for their lives so we knew they were going to come out and have a fair go.”

McGregor said everything will go on the line for Saturday’s cut-throat encounter against the Tigers.

Tall defender Harrison Foott and Ben Wilkinson, who both missed Saturday’s match with injury, remain in the mix for selection.

“It comes down to us versus Torquay this week,” he said.

“The conditions suited the Tigers body shapes last time we played, they had some guys in the midfield that were stronger and they were harder over the ball than us.”

Torquay who defeated Ocean Grove by 21 points in Round nine, caused the upset in Round 17 defeating ladder leaders Drysdale in a one point thriller.

Game starts at 2:10pm at Spring Creek Reserve in Torquay on Saturday.
